Beans are among the oldest foods, dating back to the earliest records of human history. There are several hypotheses to explain the origin and domestication of beans. More recent data, based on electrophoretic patterns, suggest the existence of three primary centers of genetic diversity for both wild and cultivated species: the Mesoamerican, the southern Andes and the northern Andes. Besides these three primary American centers, several other secondary centers can be identified in some parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, where American genotypes were introduced.
